After successfully Losing 3 stone in weight in the previous year I did a sponsored diet which lead me into a love for running & fitness. From looking into the mirror & hating what was looking back at me to a fitness loving passionate motivator I have gone full circle! 2012 was an amazing year of changes, challenges & success!

2013 saw new challenges for me regarding my health & for charity fundraising also!

I discovered the amazing Blind Veterans on twitter I clicked the link read up about their incredible work & thought I must get behind this excellent deserving charity!

I am not alone in thinking that our dear veterans can often be the forgotten generation & I just had to get on board to help as much as I can in getting their name out there! being a passionate charity supporter & Twitter fan I got to work!

My first challenge was to run 10k of the Nice Works Marathon w/e in May 2013 for Blind Veterans UK which was fantastic as it was held in my home town! Followed by me creating a team naming it #FitTastic to motivate 7 help train 4 ladies to lose 8lbs in 8 weeks. I advertised for anyone who wished to lose weight to join me & 5 of us did & proudly we succeeded!

When #FitTastic challenge concluded I really wanted another challenge to get my teeth into to support our wonderful Blind veterans. I saw the WALK100k & thought no way,.. then I couldn’t get it out of my mind, kept me awake all night even getting a tummy ache as I knew this is right for me! As a newly qualified Fitness Instructor I felt this would be a hard challenge mentally & physically the biggest fitness challenge to date,.. yet something inside just wouldn’t let me leave this idea alone until I signed up…so I did!!

I put a kind of advert out on Twitter & Facebook asking if anyone would like to join me for the WALK100k & I was really impressed with the response! First it was twitter friend Mark Coram to sign up, then Michael Wheeler & Ian Davies people I have not met in person but really are embracing this amazing challenge with me, next on the list is my great local friend Maria Sargent from Motivated Moovers, a fitness instructor/Sports coach herself passionate about fitness I knew she would make for a great team member & fitness training coach along the way also! So I came up with the name #StrideOnTime after singing the song “Ride On Time” by Black Box I thought oh yes this is it! So team “Stride On Time” was born!

When supporting a charity close to your heart the feeling inside is amazing, supporting Blind veterans UK I am giving something back to our brave veterans who endure/endured long stints away from their families often in hostile, lonely places, my dear late grandpa Charles Yonwin Cartwright served in WW2 Bomb disposal Unit & saw some horrific scenes & memories I knew stayed with him until he passed away. So this is my pledge for all young, mature, blind & partially sighted veterans I will train hard, & raise as much awareness & Pounds for you as a huge thank you for our freedom today!

My fitness training continues but the real training starts in January 2014 with long hill walking, learning about all aspects of long haul walking, kit needed & so on. The beautiful south downs is on my doorstep so will be taking long training walks with Maria, & friends, also I will continue to run & use the gym at my local leisure Centre The Triangle!

The Blind veterans have a fantastic supportive WALK 100 page with everything you need to get you ready for the challenge in June 2014 Im so excited about this & I know the team members are also!

If anyone would like to join our team #StrideOnTime please do get in touch quoting #StrideOnTime we have room for some more fun likeminded people who wish to take on a big challenge but with fun at the heart of this! I feel like I know the other signed up members of our team yet never met them! I love charity challenges brings people together also the best out in people!

Kind wishes, Nikki Bailey @NikkiSalsa twitter
